Adnan Syed, who was convicted of the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, had his conviction reinstated by Maryland's highest court on Monday. Syed's case gained national attention after it was featured in the popular podcast "Serial" in 2014. The decision overturns a lower court ruling that had vacated Syed's conviction and ordered a new trial.
In the 4-3 ruling, the Maryland Court of Appeals concluded that Syed's trial attorney's failure to contact a potential alibi witness did not constitute ineffective assistance of counsel. The court also rejected Syed's argument that the state's failure to disclose the plea deal of a key witness violated his due process rights.
Syed's case was the subject of the first season of "Serial," which examined the evidence and raised questions about the fairness of his trial. The podcast garnered millions of listeners and helped to bring Syed's case to national attention.
Syed has been in prison for more than two decades and has maintained his innocence throughout the legal process. His attorneys have not yet announced whether they will appeal the decision to the US Supreme Court.
