"Candida Auris: The Deadly Fungal Infection Taking the US by Storm"

fungal infection

Candida auris, a deadly and drug-resistant fungal infection, is spreading rapidly throughout the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified over 1,600 confirmed cases of the infection in the US, with more than 400 cases reported in the last year alone. Candida auris can cause serious bloodstream infections and has a mortality rate of up to 30 percent.

The fungus is often spread in healthcare settings and can persist on surfaces for long periods, making it difficult to control. Patients who have weakened immune systems or who have undergone invasive medical procedures are at highest risk of contracting the infection.

The CDC is urging healthcare facilities to take steps to prevent the spread of Candida auris, including using effective cleaning and disinfecting measures, implementing appropriate isolation protocols, and conducting surveillance for infections.

The rapid spread of Candida auris highlights the urgent need for new treatments for drug-resistant infections. Researchers are working to develop new therapies and better understand the mechanisms by which the fungus is able to resist treatment.
